STEP RI Science and Technology Park of the University of Rijeka has participated in the project “National student startup competition – encouraging an entrepreneurial culture and a positive attitude towards lifelong learning” which was co-financed by the European Union from European Social Fund (ESP) 2007 to 2013.
The project was intended for students aged 18-29 attending higher educational institutions in Osijek, Rijeka, Split and Zagreb.
The aim of the project was to stimulate innovative entrepreneurship among students of technical (ICT) and economic studies, as well as to promote lifelong learning through the national student startup competition.
Apart from STEP RI, the project partners were ZIP Business Incubator, Technology transfer Office – University of Split and BIOS Business Incubator. All of the partners have wide experience in organizing and implementing startup competitions of regional and national significance.
The finale of the National student startup competition was held on March 9, 2016 in the headquarters of the ZIP – Zagreb business incubator. In total 148 students took part with 87 projects, of which 16 projects made it to the finals (5 teams from Zagreb, 5 teams from Rijeka, 4 teams from Split and 2 teams from Osijek).
The first prize of 15,000 HRK was awarded to team Smartfood from Rijeka who designed a line of probiotic products containing genetically modified bacteria from dairy products.
The Zagreb team Canelia received the second prize, three smart phones, for designing a smart device for dog training and the corresponding mobile application.
The third prize, consisting in the direct entry to the ZIP incubator, was awarded to another Zagreb team, Mellon, who created an online learning platform for online video games.
Split team Lucky4You designed a mobile interpretation center that is powered by solar energy, giving it full independence, and won a special prize (3 000 HRK) for the best project in the tourism industry.
