The first Science and Technology Park in Croatia

The Science and Technology Park of the University of Rijeka, STeP Ri, was founded on August 8th, 2008 as a limited company (Ltd). STeP Ri is owned by the University of Rijeka and partners and is located at the new University campus in the area of Rijeka called Trsat.

The aim of establishing the Science and Technology Park is to encourage the synergy between scientists, technologists and entrepreneurs of the Region. Such synergy, we hope, will result in faster development of R&D potential of the University as well as development of economical potential of the Region. In this way, STEP Ri will contribute to the realisation of one of the key strategic goals of the University, the transformation of our society into a knowledge society.

The establishment of Science and Technology Park of the University of Rijeka is supported by the Program TECHRO, which is aimed at the development of technology infrastructure. TEHCRO is funded by the Business Innovation Center of Croatia, BICRO Ltd. (through the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport of the Republic of Croatia) The Program encourages entrepreneurship based on innovation and new technologies.

IASP definition of what is a Research Park?

Alternatively referred to as research parks, science parks, technology parks,
technopoles, science centers, business innovation centers, and centers for advanced
technology, there appears to be no singular characterization of a research
park. The International Association of Science Parks defines a Science Park as
“an organisation managed by specialised professionals, whose main aim is to increase
the wealth of its community by promoting the culture of innovation and the
competitiveness of its associated businesses and knowledge-based institutions.
To enable these goals to be met, a Science Park stimulates and manages the flow
of knowledge and technology amongst universities, R&D institutions, companies
and markets; it facilitates the creation and growth of innovation-based companies
through incubation and spin-off processes; and provides other value-added services
together with high quality space and facilities.”
